GLEC Columbus

The aquatic toxicology laboratories are fully equipped for static toxicity evaluations of complex effluents, stormwater, and single compounds using a variety of vertebrate and invertebrate test species. Instrumentation includes recording thermometers, pH meters, dissolved oxygen meters, conductivity meters, and a variety of ion specific probes. A separate laboratory is equipped to conduct effluent treatability evaluations. Ten environmental chambers are available for use. Standard compound and dissecting microscopes are available for routine observations. Oil free air and reverse osmosis (RO) treated water is available throughout the laboratories. Stock cultures of Ceriodaphnia dubia, Daphnia pulex, and fathead minnows are currently maintained, and Daphnia magna, Chironomus tentans, Hyallela azteca, Lumbriculus variegatus, and Mysidopsis bahia are available to be used as test species on an as needed basis.

The effluent treatability capability at the Columbus Operations is based on the Center's strengths in aquatic toxicology and environmental engineering. In Columbus, the Center's staff is experienced in simulating and optimizing the treatment of wastewater treatment plant (WWTP) influent water and the secondary/tertiary treatment of WWTP effluent for conformance to regulatory requirements. Battelle engineers (who are available to GLEC) have also conducted WWTP surveys to optimize the operation and treatment efficiency of chemical and biological wastewater treatment plants.

The environmental assessment capability at the Columbus Operations is based on the Center's strengths in the aquatic ecology, aquatic toxicology, and environmental chemistry. In addition to these areas, the environmental assessment capability at the Columbus Operations can draw on the diverse environmental expertise available throughout GLEC. This expertise includes not only the capabilities of the Traverse City Operations, but also Battelle's expertise in site remediation, environmental and human health risk assessment, ground water modeling, soil science, and atmospheric science. This depth of experience has allowed the Center's scientists to provide services to meet a wide variety of client needs.
