Field Plan Document for Deriving Bioaccumulation Factors
(U.S. Environmental Protection Agency)

A draft document was prepared by GLEC for review and publication by EPA=s Health and Ecological Criteria Division to provide guidance for the development of field study plans for the derivation of waterbody-specific bioaccumulation factors (BAFs) and biota sediment accumulation factors (BSAFs) for non-polar organic chemicals. The document included approaches and methods for sampling which were applicable to virtually any waterbody in the United States. Statistical simulation models were developed and applied to evaluate sampling strategies for various physical, hydrological and biological circumstances and for various chemical types. The draft document described how an effective field sampling program should be structured, including recommendations and considerations regarding field procedures, laboratory methods, statistical analyses, uncertainty estimates, and data quality requirements for the generation of scientifically-supportable BAFs and BSAFs.
