Toxic contaminants in bottom sediments, including certain metals, create the potential for continued environmental degradation. Defensible sediment guidelines were necessary to assess the extent of sediment contamination and implement measures to effectively limit or prevent additional contamination. One of the ways in which EPA responded to this absence of a national sediment guideline was by pursuing the development and implementation of sediment quality guidelines for mixtures of metals in sediments. GLEC's role in this process was to provide support to revise, complete and publish the metals mixtures ESG document. The work assignment included writing additional subsections, technically reviewing the document, responding to and performing any necessary revisions, and producing a final draft document for publishing in hardcopy and on the internet.
