August 11, 2022 - The USEPA Office of Water awarded GLEC a $6 million competitive Task Order to conduct field sampling for the 2023-2024 National Rivers and Streams Assessment (NRSA). The NRSA is a major element of four ongoing surveys under EPA’s multi-year National Aquatic Resource Surveys (NARS) program designed to assess the ecological health and condition of U.S. waters. The 2023-2024 NRSA will be the third NRSA survey season since the NARS program began in 2007, all of which have involved GLEC as a principal contractor. The award follows GLEC’s field sampling, logistics, and training support for the NARS 2022 National Lakes Assessment. The GLEC NRSA 2023-2024 contracting team includes EnviroScience, Inc., the Amnis Opes Institute, and the Midwest Biodiversity Institute. Field crews from all four organizations plan to perform just over 1,000 sampling site visits to wadeable stream and larger river sites throughout the conterminous U.S. during the 2023 and 2024 survey seasons. Water, river beds and riparian habitats will be sampled and assessed for a variety of chemical and biological indicators, including nutrients, benthic macroinvertebrates, periphyton, chlorophyll, fish tissue, and fecal indicators. Survey results will be added to prior NRSA survey data  to generate statistically valid estimates of the water quality and ecological health of all U.S. rivers and streams.
